Music of My Mother
Hi everyone ! I decided to interview my mom for this blog. I went with her because me and her have very different tastes when it comes to music. The questions I asked are in bold, and I record her response under the question. I hope y'all enjoy this project as much as I did. Enjoy!
What was your favorite genre or artist at various points in your life?
She said any HairBand (Metal Bands) during her teenage years, poison, motley crew, kiss, gun n roses. With artists now, she's really open to anything but her current favorite artists are Post Malone & Adele.
What sort of music was popular when you were growing up? Did you listen to that kind of music, or something less mainstream?
She listens to HairBands, Heavy Metal (Metallica Or Megadeth). She did listen to mainstream music which was HairBands, and Heavy Metal.
Was there any style or genre of music that was off-limits ?
She said that there was no music that wasn’t off limits, she listened to pretty much everything which was mostly what her parents listened too.
What is your first memory of music?
She said it would either be with her father or her mother. The memory with her father was them listening to “He Stop Loving Her Today” by George Jones. Her other memory was with her mother and then listening to “Wasted Day And Wasted Nights) by Freddy Finderly.
What technology did you use to listen to when you were a kid?
She said that the only things they had were cassette tapes that they would record off the radio and replay them, and of course vinyl.
What sort of music had a big influence on you when you were a kid? when you were a teenager? Now?
When she was a child she mostly listened to country music because that is what her parents listened to. She said anything by Patsy Cline, George Jones, and Percy Sledge. She said when she was little her father took her to a George Jones concert, but he didn’t show up. George had a reputation of getting drunk before shows and not showing up, getting the name “no jones.”
When she was a teenager she was really into Hair Bands. Even on the weekends, he and her friend would go to the skate ring. When new albums get released, go and listen to them. Also when Salt n Pepa came out she listened to them alot. She even said that she would connect her big stereo speakers to her friend's truck to blare music down the road.
The music she's into now would be mostly everything but she really likes Post Malone, she even went to his concert in 2020.
How do you feel music has evolved over the course of your life?
She feels it involves a lot more freedom of speech in music today, because you wouldn't dare be cussing in tracks, or songs. She feels it hard to what genre is what now, and that she feels like it's lost its authenticity.
If you went to school dances, what kind of music did they have?
She said that they would play Boys to Men, New Addition, Bon Jovi, Salt n Pepa. She would just hang out with friends , catch up , and go to dances to socialize mainly.
Here's some of her music choices below :
“He Stop Loving Her Today” by George Jones
"Congratulations" by Post Malone
Hey bekka! I love how your blog is set up. Your mom sounds really cool and she has great taste in music. I never heard the term hair bands, so it was cool to learn something new. It seems like you have a very complex upbring of music. Love the blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Rebekka, I found it interesting that your mother listened to hairbands and artist like Kiss and Guns N’ Roses during her teenage years. I found this interesting as I too enjoy these bands and think its cool that these are still well-known bands today. I also found it interesting that she enjoys country music as that is what her parents listened to. I related to this as some of my own music taste has been influenced by my family as well. Lastly, I agree that modern mainstream songs have more freedom of speech as they often include explicit content, subject matters, and lyrics.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was an absolute lover of Vinyl and as it turns out my sister has started her own Vinyl collection so that is cool. And I must say that your mom has an absolute goated list of bands she likes to listen to, no minus there.
ReplyDeleteYour mom sounds like she has had a lot of fun with music throughout her life. Her taste growing up though seems to have some overlap with my dad's. Love some good hair band music.
