Spicy Salsa

Hi everyone ! I decided for my topic this week I would take y'all through the origin of Salsa and exactly what musical aspects make it up. I actually didn't realize how many different adaptations of Salsa there were until I decided to dig deeper. Although this blog I'm going to go over the basics of its origin, if it had influences, and what are important aspects of Salsa. I hope you all enjoy my entry !!! Where Did Salsa Come From ? Many people argue to this day where Salsa comes from, some say from New York or even Cuba. The first popular argument is that it came from Cuba. They claim that it is a newer version of traditional Afro-Cuban , which is a style of Latin jazz that evolved in New York City in the 1940s but originated in Cuba. So they figured the origins would come from Cuba but the other place is New York. They claim if Salsa had a time stamp that it would be in the 1960s in New York and then it developed into Cuban musicians. But most of the articles I have foun...

Music of My Mother

Hi everyone ! I decided to interview my mom for this blog. I went with her because me and her have very different tastes when it comes to music. The questions I asked are in bold, and I record her response under the question. I hope y'all enjoy this project as much as I did. Enjoy! What was your favorite genre or artist at various points in your life? She said any HairBand (Metal Bands) during her teenage years, poison, motley crew, kiss, gun n roses. With artists now, she's really open to anything but her current favorite artists are Post Malone & Adele.  What sort of music was popular when you were growing up? Did you listen to that kind of music, or something less mainstream? She listens to HairBands, Heavy Metal (Metallica Or Megadeth). She did listen to mainstream music which was HairBands, and Heavy Metal. Was there any style or genre of music that was off-limits ? She said that there was no music that wasn’t off limits, she listened to pretty much everything which wa...

Music of South Africa

First we have Sho Madjozi, a 29 year old South African female rapper from Limpopo, South Africa. She is very skillful and is so inspiring to watch from. The reason I chose her out of many other good artists was because of her outlook and how she connects with her music. In a New York Time 2019 article she talks about her heritage and how she represents it through her music. She heavily used inspired clothes and hairstyles made from Tsonga culture in her music videos. She mainly raps in Xitsonga which is English and Tsonga mixed together, sometimes she raps in full Swahili. She also involves beats in her music called gqom, which is a shadowy strain of house that originated from Durban, South Africa. She also mentioned in the article the conservativeness of Tsonga culture, and how her music has opened ways and helped for younger generations struggling with that. I would recommend checking out her and this article , it's just very interesting, and goes into depth more about her and he...
