Vietnamese Traditional Music

Image
Hi everyone ! I hope so far you have all enjoyed my blogs and this class altogether because I did. For my final blog I wanted to do something we didn't cover in class and I found Vietnamese traditional music. Looking this topic up was actually easier than I thought, I thought it was going to be a lot harder. I am excited to present this as my last blog, so enjoy it ! History of Vietnamese Music  Unlike some cultures, Vietnamese dates back to ancient times like the 15th century. Now there are different types of Vietnamese music relating to locations like Southern Vietnam, Central Vietnam, and Northern Vietnam. I'll be covering only Northern Vietnam sections, feel free to research the others . But more on the history and influences on Vietnamese music. As I mentioned above, Vietnam music dates back a long time, but it still has a large impact with their community. People consider it a daily aspect of their lives, and used in everyday actions too. They still use it for children...

Traditional Korean Music

Image
Hi everyone ! This week I am learning about different cultures in Asia. I wanted to dive deeper into things we haven't explored yet like Korea. I rarely hear anything about traditional Korean music and their cultures as it is. So I thought it would be cool to cover it, hope y'all enjoy! First thing on my list is a Daegeum, it is a traditional Korean instrument that came from Korean folklore. This folklore claimed this flute to be the harbinger of peace, harmony, and wellness. It is a crosswise flute with a deep buzzing sound. It is constructed of bamboo that is made into two sizes of flutes. The first one is called a Jeong-ak Daegeum, that is 90cm in length, and is mostly used in classical/aristocratic music. Then the smaller second flute is called Sanjo Daegeum, it is about 75cm in length, and mostly played in folk music. The Daegeum outline consists of 8 holes, of which 6 are for your fingers. The top hole is for blowing, and the bottom hole is for tuning. This instrument is...

Spicy Salsa

Hi everyone ! I decided for my topic this week I would take y'all through the origin of Salsa and exactly what musical aspects make it up. I actually didn't realize how many different adaptations of Salsa there were until I decided to dig deeper. Although this blog I'm going to go over the basics of its origin, if it had influences, and what are important aspects of Salsa. I hope you all enjoy my entry !!! Where Did Salsa Come From ? Many people argue to this day where Salsa comes from, some say from New York or even Cuba. The first popular argument is that it came from Cuba. They claim that it is a newer version of traditional Afro-Cuban , which is a style of Latin jazz that evolved in New York City in the 1940s but originated in Cuba. So they figured the origins would come from Cuba but the other place is New York. They claim if Salsa had a time stamp that it would be in the 1960s in New York and then it developed into Cuban musicians. But most of the articles I have foun...

Music of My Mother

Image
Hi everyone ! I decided to interview my mom for this blog. I went with her because me and her have very different tastes when it comes to music. The questions I asked are in bold, and I record her response under the question. I hope y'all enjoy this project as much as I did. Enjoy! What was your favorite genre or artist at various points in your life? She said any HairBand (Metal Bands) during her teenage years, poison, motley crew, kiss, gun n roses. With artists now, she's really open to anything but her current favorite artists are Post Malone & Adele.  What sort of music was popular when you were growing up? Did you listen to that kind of music, or something less mainstream? She listens to HairBands, Heavy Metal (Metallica Or Megadeth). She did listen to mainstream music which was HairBands, and Heavy Metal. Was there any style or genre of music that was off-limits ? She said that there was no music that wasn’t off limits, she listened to pretty much everything which wa...

Music of South Africa

First we have Sho Madjozi, a 29 year old South African female rapper from Limpopo, South Africa. She is very skillful and is so inspiring to watch from. The reason I chose her out of many other good artists was because of her outlook and how she connects with her music. In a New York Time 2019 article she talks about her heritage and how she represents it through her music. She heavily used inspired clothes and hairstyles made from Tsonga culture in her music videos. She mainly raps in Xitsonga which is English and Tsonga mixed together, sometimes she raps in full Swahili. She also involves beats in her music called gqom, which is a shadowy strain of house that originated from Durban, South Africa. She also mentioned in the article the conservativeness of Tsonga culture, and how her music has opened ways and helped for younger generations struggling with that. I would recommend checking out her and this article , it's just very interesting, and goes into depth more about her and he...

Music of the Indigenous Americans

Image
As we went through Native Americans cultures, there was so much more that I wanted to look up. Especially when we went through the dances such as Pow-wow, and Fancy Dance. I wanted to search more about it and I found many other dances they perform, but what stood out to me was the Rain Dance. The Rain Dance is where women and men can participate in the ceremony unlike some dances where they perform separately. The ceremony is performed to ask the gods or spirits for rain that is needed for their crops. While the dances vary from tribe to tribe, accessories are often needed, some tribes wear large headdresses. Others just wear paint on the body, beads, animal skins, and etc. A common thing in the dresses or face paint is the color blue because it represents the winds, and the rain. Another thing is that these clothes are normally not worn outside of this ceremony. This dance also moves in a zigzag pattern rather than in a circular pattern like other ceremonies. (Information was found on...

My Musical Journey

Hello there ! I'm Rebekka Braziel and I'm a huge music enthusiast! I've never been gifted to sing or play an instrument (but I did do a little of piano in high school) but I do love listening to it. I'm currently a Psychology major at the moment but I might want to double in something cultural. I've grown up in South Carolina my whole life, but I do wish to see the world and travel when I get older. My current music taste is all over the place at the moment from Megan Thee Stallion to Fleetwood Mac to TWICE. I mainly listen to hip/hop and Kpop but I do love some oldies as well. Another thing about me is that I'm on the tennis team, I've been playing it for 7 years and love every minute of it. I guess that's all for now, now enjoy some YouTube videos :) Now I know we only had to put songs we liked at the moment but I couldn't just leave these out. So I just put two I have been currently obsessed with or in love with for a very long time. They are act...
